Guest Sword Posted April 10, 2006 Report Posted April 10, 2006 Hi all, I have a question regarding my Rad Fans. As per the picture, my offside fan does not work at any temperature. Now I know from Elsawin that the fans come in at "stages". Now the nearside fan will kick in when my temp guage is at just above 3/4. I have bridged the connecter to the right fan direct to the battery and the fan works. Now the picture below describes the intervals the fan/s should kick in. My question is, does the right fan come in at different intervals, or is it supposed to kick in with the nearside fan? http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/9213/radfans3sx.jpg thansk for the responses in advance. Masked Marauder Posted April 10, 2006 Report Posted April 10, 2006 Do you have air-con/CC? If the air-con/CC is on do both the fans work? Quote
Guest Sword Posted April 10, 2006 Report Posted April 10, 2006 I do have CC, but it has been sort of "semi removed" Heater works fine, just the CC compressor is "out of order" is that what the offside fan is for the CC>? Quote
Masked Marauder Posted April 10, 2006 Report Posted April 10, 2006 No, both fans will come on when the CC is on. It would prove the wiring to the fan was fine if it worked with the CC on. Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted April 10, 2006 Report Posted April 10, 2006 Although the temperature switches are designed to switch on and off at the temperatures described you will probably find if you can that there is a profile which wil control the fans and the temperature switches are just part of the control loop and not the entire control, for example the CC is an input and the alternator loading is another also the lighting circuit may also be an inout then the ecu will decide if the fans are required to be operated it is not just a case of the swtiches being operated. Guest Sword Posted April 10, 2006 Report Posted April 10, 2006 excuse my ignorance, but I still dont quite understand if the fan should be functional for just cooling or just for AC/CC. Surely the nearside fan kicking in at just over 3/4 on the dial is not correct. Especially if it is to come in on stages, maybe I have a faulty coolant temp sensor, or a duff thermostat, or even radiator fan thermo switch? What do you lot tip it on? Quote
jvernon Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Can somebody just clarify for me? Are both radiator fans supposed to be on when climate control is switched on regardless of coolant temperature? I've only ever had one fan running whether the climate control is on or not and to be honest I'm not even sure if the second fan works. I always thought the second fan was 'stage 2' and that it only came on when the temperature got too high for example if the car was being used in a country with a warmer climate. It doesn't bother me that the second fan doesn't come on because the temperature always stays in the normal section of the guage, I'm just curious. :) Regards,James Quote
Guest Snooper601 Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 Both fans always run if the aircon is on on mine, though this causes them to fail at about 100K ;) They will even run within 3 mins of starting the engine. They cost Quote
sepulchrave Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 jvernon, your second fan is not working, this is common and it means that your other fan will probably fail before long. Do a search, someone knowledgeable has already posted a fix that requires no expenditure (can't remember who or when I saw it tho') . Quote

Justice Posted May 8, 2006 Report Posted May 8, 2006 I have just gone out to my VR6 Sharan and started it with the AC on and only the left hand fan comes on (standing at the front looking down) I unpluged the conector and conected it to the right hand fan and it worked as normal.I would check yours this way as the last thing you want to do is buy a new fan if it's not needed.
